Senator Geraldine Thompson made it almost official on Tuesday. In speaking with the Orlando Sentinel, Thompson said that she intends to run for Congress in District 10 once special session has completed.

Thompson made her intentions clear last week when she released a statement saying that she was “eyeing Congress.”

With Demings running, this sets up to be one of the most watched primaries across the state.

Thompson has longevity. She’s served in the legislature since 2006 first as a member of the Florida House, and then in 2012, she transitioned to the Florida Senate.

Speaking of the Senate, Thompson’s road to the upper chamber wasn’t a crystal stair. She faced current Orange County Commissioner Victoria Siplin in a tough primary.

Siplin had name recognition, like Demings, and was able to raise a competitive amount of money, over 140K. So tough primaries aren’t new to Thompson.

She punished Siplin at the voting booth as Thompson amassed nearly 56% of the vote.

Thompson is hoping for the same return on election night when she faces off against Demings next year.

But moving back to Thompson, she’s certainly qualified and likely a candidate that will appeal to many voters in the newly drawn district who want representation laced with legislative experience.

She was a leading voice to alter the state’s ‘stand your ground’ law and has recently called for body cameras for all police officers. Thompson is an advocate for gun control and has a solid voting record of favoring Democratic principles.

Never one to shy away from standing up for what she believes in, Thompson gets vocal whenever anything is being rammed through the Senate that she doesn’t believe is good for the state.

Staying with her record, Thompson has received strong union support as well as the backing of local educators.

Simply put–she’s a definitely a strong candidate with credentials that many would love to host.

Leading up to her battle with Demings, and any other Dem who may decide to join, she’ll have the victories of the past to fuel her as she moves torwards to making D.C. a reality.
