State Senator Darren Soto (D-Orlando) is set to announce his run for Congress on Thursday morning. Soto was waiting for Congressman Alan Grayson to announce his decision regarding a run for the Senate, which he did last week.
So now it is Soto’s turn.
Flanked by legions of supporters, and two prominent Central Florida lawmakers in Senator Geraldine Thompson and Representative Randolph Bracy, Soto will kick-off his run for Congressional District 9.
Serving the Central Florida area since the mid-aughts, Soto has developed a reputation as one who has the political savvy to work with the other side and the intelligence to fight for good legislation.
Not known as a flamethrower or one for cacophony, Soto makes his mark by way of knowledge. There is simplicity in knowing what you’re talking about and Soto is one of the more conscious members of the Senate.
Since going to Tallahassee, Soto has aided in securing millions for Valencia College, passing the Firefighter Death Benefit Bill, and fighting for education and teachers.
But even with that reputation behind him, he’s headed into a tough primary. Soto will face Susannah Randolph, District Director for Congressman Alan Grayson. She’s also married to Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph.
In addition to Randolph, Ricardo Rangel, former state representative, announced his decision to run last week, and Valleri Crabtree launched her campaign for CD 9 late last year. Then there’s Kissimmee Vice Mayor Wanda Rentas, a Republican, running as well as the potential candidacy of Mike LaRosa, another state lawmaker.
While all will certainly bring impressive credentials to the table, Soto is the most seasoned and well positioned of the group. He has served the public well since taking office in the Florida House of Representatives and subsequently in the Florida Senate.
Obviously this is just the beginning of what’s sure to be a long road to election day in 2016, but judging by the list of candidates, it surely will be fun to watch.
